The Shoe Doesn't Fit - Swollen Feet

Swollen feet can be inconvenient and painful - they certainly won’t make those sandals look any cuter… When your foot resembles a balloon and you’re not sure why, it could surprisingly be dozens of things. An injury, pregnancy swelling, various conditions that involve unhealthy blood flow or clots. If you haven’t changed your routine and your feet are suddenly swelling, consult a physician ASAP.

On the flip side, if your body went through something slightly different than usual - like a long flight or lots of standing - swelling is likely normal. If you think you fall into that category, here are seven quick tips to reduce swelling and get you back to normal (of course, this is not a substitute for seeing a medical professional).

Action Steps (pun intended)

1) Epsom Salt – soak feet for 15-20 minutes with about two cups of Epsom salt in hot water. BONUS: This also releases toxins and feels great on dry skin.

2) Elevation- Raise your feet above heart level to get the fluid flowing away from your feet. If you’ve been standing all day, make this common practice – swelling or not.

3) Yoga, Stretching – Great for increased circulation on a regular basis.

4) Drink Water – Your body might be retaining water because you’re dehydrated. Monitor your water intake, this is something easily controlled.

5) Foot Massage – Activates blood flow and, let’s be honest, it feels great at the end of the day!

6) Support Hose or Compression Socks - to increase circulation and give relief from the pain of swelling. Great for those who sit in an office all day.

7) Salt and Caffeine - both retain fluid so go easy.
