As things heat up and you start to hunt for those flip flops in the back of your closet, it’s a good idea to give your place a deep cleaning, or most commonly known as a spring cleaning. As you freshen up your home’s decor and summer wardrobe, now’s the perfect time to eliminate what is no longer needed - including the dust and dirt.
As you prep your home for a good scrubbing, make sure to protect your health in the process. Transferring dust from the coffee table into your lungs defeats the purpose. Below are three simple ways to keep the spring cleaning party safe for you and your loved ones.
1. Cover Your Mouth
After you’ve swept or dusted, the lingering particles in the air will go straight to your lungs. Protect them by opening a window for air circulation and use a standard dust mask. This will protect you from the floating debris and prevent you from inhaling spray cleaners, many of which are toxic.
2. Toss Expired Products
Check expiration dates. If there isn't one and you don’t remember when you bought it, toss it. The dangers of expired products range from no longer working properly to turning into bacteria. In addition to protecting you and your family's health, you’ll feel so much better when you eliminate the clutter and can finally find that bottle of hair serum that you do use. As with anything, if you have an unexpired product that you're not using, donate it to a friend or local shelter.
3. Natural Cleaners
For years I joked that I was allergic to cleaning because every time I deep-cleaned my home, my head would start pounding. Unfortunately, I’m not allergic to cleaning (*sign), I’m allergic to the toxins in cleaners. Protect yourself and your family from unnatural ingredients that have a wide-variety of unhealthy side effects. There are endless recipes for house-hold cleaners online. One of my favorites is from Women’s Voices. Their video tutorial is less than two minutes and shows you a quick, cheap, and simple way to make all-purpose cleaner.
