Memorial Day - The Healthy Way!

May 24, 2018

If you’re like most Americans this Memorial Day weekend, you’ll attend (or host) a BBQ or two to celebrate your independence and enjoy this gorgeous, end-of-spring weather.

The food can be out of this world delicious, but for those watching their waistline, this time could be one big temptation. As you decide on what dish to prepare, let the suggestions below inspire you to choose healthy, guilt-free options. And don’t worry, there’s no sacrifice on taste so you'll get invited back next year.

The Perfect Side Dish

Corn on the Cob

A barbecue favorite for many, corn on the cob is healthy and delicious. Skip the butter and replace it with creamy coconut oil (no seriously, it's really good).

Vegetable Kabobs

Squash, tomatoes, baked potato cubes... Whatever you fancy, grilled vegetables on a stick are a killer side dish!

Tossed Salad

Don't underestimate the deliciousness of a good salad. Toss it with a light, yummy dressing - tossed because it's hard for guests to spread the dressing just right while standing with a flimsy paper plate. Try replacing the croutons with sunflower seeds for a nice crunch!

A Praise-Worthy Main Course

Grilled Chicken or Shrimp

You can't go wrong with grilled chicken or shrimp. These lean proteins will satisfy your hunger and keep you on track with your health goals.

Lean Hamburger

Don't be afraid to have a burger! Skip the bun and load up a lean patty with fresh veggies. That, combined with a healthy side dish or two, will leave you feeling anything but deprived.

Don't Forget the Dessert!

Watermelon and Cantaloupe

These in-season fruits are the perfect juicy delight. A BBQ doesn't feel right without some watermelon or cantaloupe, so this one is practically a free pass for those counting calories.

Strawberry (Lite) Shortcake

Angel Food Cake + Light Whipped Cream + Fresh Strawberries = Guilt-free Heaven

Get creative! Put some little decorative flags in the cake or add a swirl of blue food coloring to the whipped cream.

Festive Jell-O

No, not your Aunt Edna's Jell-O mold. Make pans of red and blue Jell-O (regular or sugar-free) then create some Jell-O Jigglers and feel like a kid again!
